From the famous Japanese pottery town of Mashiko, this rustic teacup reflects the modern folk-art style known as "mingei" which celebrates an aesthetic of modest simplicity.

The term "mingei" was coined by Yanagi Soetsu (1889-1961) in 1926 to refer to common crafts that had been brushed aside and overlooked by the industrial revolution. Supported by several well-known potters, the mingei movement sought to celebrate and keep alive the traditions of ordinary craftsmen that spoke to the spiritual and practical needs of life.
